#COVID19AB Suburban Update 02/02/22

The final decision is coming Saturday from dear Premier Kenney. He's calling it, "a prudent decision based on the latest data." This should be interesting. I believe Alberta will proceed with the second phase of the province's reopening plan and it's a good step, again, as long as we're going off the data... y'know that factual stuff with numbers our Premier doesn't seem too familiar with?

Last Monday I returned to the office for the first time since September 2021 and noticed a change in attitude in my clients. From saying things like, "we'll get there if we work together," to being completely over it/tired//done with all things COVID-19. Just yesterday I went to the grocery store to pick up a few things I needed to make my husband a special birthday dinner (1 bag = 100$). There were quite a number of people already not wearing a mask in CO-OP. And the funny thing is CO-OP was one of the grocery stores who until now, took masking quite seriously. The tone has changed a lot in the last three weeks. Enter: #FreedomConvoy - a movement that involved a lot of Albertans. And they are angrier than and people I've ever seen.

I'd love to know "who" exactly the #FreedomConvoy is for. Is it just the baby boomers or the babies?

My own Mother has been aggressively vocal - saying things that don't make much sense (like, "I regret getting the vaccine at all") and posting shit on Facebook that she suddenly identifies with because like all of us, she's tired of the mandatory mask bylaws and the work-from-home. If I question her or begin to argue she becomes extremely defensive and it makes me feel as though I'm talking to a truck driver in support of the #FreedomConvoy. It's all pretty sad to me. Even though she was born after the baby boomer generation she's 100% on the bandwagon. Pretty sure she's not talking to me right now because I sent her a text the other day saying: for the love of God, take a break from Facebook please.

Growing up in a Conservative household in Alberta, exactly zero members of our immediate family made money in the O&G industry. Mom's Mom owned a hair salon and Grandpa drove a tow truck after his partner in a concrete business moved to Texas. According to my Mother, Trudeau is responsible for all damages to our economy - that is, Alberta's. She claims Premier Kenney has done the best he could throughout the pandemic, with the knowledge he had of #COVID19AB and yet our modeling was doomed from the second "wave." Not to mention the war he waged against Alberta's teachers and nurses at the start of the pandemic which led to an overwhelmed healthcare system. And not to mention he is under investigation STILL by the RCMP for how he was elected to his party. Mom has grown a specific hatred towards Trudeau and thinks Trudeau is punishing Alberta. Meanwhile for the last forty years, Conservatives have been making assloads of money in this province and investing sweet fuck all into any other industry. I heard Kenney this week announce a nearly two-billion-dollar investment into the Red Deer Hospital to distract from the fact he is STILL handing out money to fund new charter schools in Alberta when the public school has had a budget freeze for how long, again?

If you checked the type of news I consume, most of it would be leaning left. But when you have an extreme-right side of the political scale, like the hateful people honking their horns and declaring a #FreedomConvoy for the "rights of Canadians" it makes me wonder, exactly whose freedoms are you "fighting" for? Just because I'm more liberal than you doesn't mean to say I love Justin Trudeau. Sure, we can blame him for not shutting down the border sooner. Blame Trudeau because you couldn't vacation in the last two years. Travel abroad is a fucking luxury. You could have gone anyway because we weren't locked down. It might have cost you more time and money, but the point is you could have left.

So what is Phase 2 anyway? The biggest thing, which has a lot of Albertans angry is the mandatory indoor mask requirement - that will be gone. Indoor and outdoor gatherings will no longer have a limit and the mandatory work-from-home requirement will be lifted. I guess it includes removing any remaining requirements for schools as well. Oh, and also capacity limits on large venues - those will be gone. Again, lots baby boomers - sorry, babies, are so looking forward to all of this.

It's no coincidence the REP (Restrictions Exemption Program) ended over a week ago and more and more people started entering an indoor public place without a mask on. This is how Premier Kenney governs: he waits to see happens and then takes up the podium (always late, of course) to react. Earlier this month he did say Alberta would continue with the reopening plan by the end of February if COVID-19 hospitalizations were trending downward. I personally cannot even look at the man so I haven't been watching his last few press conferences. The man has no respect for anyone who doesn't drive a pickup truck.

Speaking of coincidence, this is probably the biggest one to date and so I must update...

Before I went into CO-OP I drove to Sobeys and found the channel letters gone from the front of the building. The windows and automatic doors were boarded up and it looked like a construction site. Sobeys CLOSED... I wonder how that happens. As I'm leaving the shopping complex I see this white Dodge pickup truck pull in and park in front of a cannabis dispensary. The first thing I notice when the driver gets out is he leaves the truck idling. Good for you man, giving no fucks about the environment! The second thing I noticed, of course how could I miss the classic bumper sticker Alberta's baby boomers love. Whoever made this is probably one of my customers but I really couldn't care less about that. The best part about all this is the dude is the picture perfect: middle-aged; 5ft 5inches tall.

Fuck You Trudeau, Thank You Very Much For The Legal Marijuana! Coincidence? No. Alberta is just an ironic province.

Top 10 Local Food Vendors of 2021: Western Canada Edition

Welcome to the last day of the year 2021. I'm sure you're all thrilled.

Having been brought up in a family that considers force-feeding their way of affection, I wanted to go out on a high note and bring you a list of some fantastic food vendors that helped me get through another year of COVID-19.

To give you some background here, in late summer 2020 I had an incident in my local grocery store that resulted in me not wanting to shop in-store for groceries. It was right before Alberta reinstated the mask bylaw for indoor, public spaces and so the timing to limit my in-person shopping interactions also felt right. At the time I also worked right across the street from SPUD.ca Calgary warehouses and would see their trucks come and go all the time. The white panels of their vehicles, decorated with colourful produce naturally caught my eye and so one afternoon I decided to check out their website.

How Does SPUD Calgary work? SPUD.ca is a grocery delivery service that provides local food and sustainable products to your doorstep. They are 100% online, offering pick-up from select organic grocers affiliated with SPUD Calgary. (See: Blush Lane Organic Market)

Immediately I signed up for an account with SPUD.ca because as a vegetarian, they offered some unique plant-based options and for my carnivorous husband, high quality local Alberta meats. It's free to join SPUD.ca and you also get a code to money to friends and family for them to spend. Depending on your community, SPUD Calgary gives you until 11:59Pm the evening before your delivery day to make changes or cancel your order. Check the map for SPUD Calgary delivery areas. No commitments/contracts/subscriptions whatsoever. Each delivery box from SPUD.ca contains cold packs to keep items cool and dry ice to keep frozen items, well, frozen. The deliveries arrive in cardboard boxes which you can easily recycle or reuse (thanks to sturdy handles) or Rubbermaid bins that will get collected by your SPUD.ca delivery driver the following week at your next delivery. The freezer jackets and dry ice packs will also be collected to be reused again and again. See sustainability at work here.

It was only within about the last six months that they extended the time you have to get your order in for delivery, which I thought to be a great help. Through COVID-19 I don't know about you, but my mind is just not the same - call it fatigue, hypersensitivity or straight up exhaustion. COVID-19 hit Albertans hard. SPUD.ca made it really easy for me to learn about great local food vendors and Alberta farms. SPUD.ca is also a certified B corp

Do you really need any more reasons to join? Signup SPUD.ca

Before we get to the moment you've all been waiting for I just want to say that I have in no way/shape/form been contracted to write this post for SPUD.ca Calgary. I am not being compensated by them, nor the local food vendors listed below. I'm just a (now pregnant) lady who loves sharing food and my experiences with it. Drumroll please.

#COVID19AB Suburban Update Ongoing

 Yeah -where to begin.

Netflix? This has been the strangest period of time, where you need not leave your home for anything other than major necessities. I'm embarrassed to admit I've had TP and PT delivered to my door. Since the start of the global pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus named COVID-19, I have anxiety.

I literally just burst into tears typing that.

It has taken me so long to fully accept that this world is fucking meaningless to some people.

And I just want to thank you for being on this journey; from me, with me. From the beginning , middle and end. Till now. There's absolutely no way I could have done it without you. I am learning.

If we aren't learning, then what's the fucking point?

Need I remind you, life is short and full of little things.

Baby, I'm a broken record.

Can

You

Hear Me Now

?

Just some friendly advice: Human beings are incredible!

We have it in ourselves to overcome anything. I believe this with my full heart.

And yet we gawk at the latest Superhero; marvel at powers like our own skin doesn't grow back after being bruised or burned. Is reality not action-packed enough? Give

Me

A

Break

Then we're the ones who don't end up taking our own advice. Right?

Am I Right?

Please do not hesitate to tell me if I am because that shit is music to my ears. My husband knows me better than anyone and he has to be very careful about saying those words around me. I get very horny.

Though isn't that the problem? We take our angers from outside places into the wrong spaces and ruin the days of others as if they owe us something. Forget actions have consequences. When we aren't careful, we lose. In the worst way we lose it all sometimes. Maybe we didn't deserve it or maybe we asked for it. I'm a believer in karma and you can call it whatever you want to call it. I know I'll be paying for things I did for the rest of my life.

Mentally, we are our worst enemy.

*

Just to pick everything apart doesn't make me feel any better. Im tird (yes, I can't possibly bother to announce it properly) because to do so would be to disrespect the exhaustive efforts of our health professionals. Frontline workers deserve 24 karat gold fucking medals for putting up with the pathetic excuse that is the Alberta government since the global pandemic.

The main thing I guess here, as I look forward to the "long-run" -or- whatever our next normal will be. Once #COVID19AB is behind us, we are going to be waiting on the next catastrophe. This isn't my assumption, it's what it is, and why it is so important to remind ourselves to be more patient. People are in a big hurry (STILL, if you can believe that) after all the world has gone through together. They can't possibly have forgotten, To be kinder doesn't cost a thing. To love our neighbours despite how many vehicles they may have parked on the street at any given time. (and of course I'm not talking about for when there's a Snow Parking Ban or street sweeping, Karen and Chad)

Every single person on this Earth has a story to tell and we are grateful, or at least we *should* be, to be living here and typing this and telling our stories.

#COVID19AB Suburban Update

It's already April and you might be feeling tired the way people get after 12+ months of a global pandemic. These have certainly been the most trying days of all my years. And I really can't imagine having to work the frontlines during a global pandemic.

Lately I've been thinking about a lot more than things that affect only myself. It happened in a way I didn't fully understand. Somewhere in the spaces between Spring 2020 and today I decided to become engaged in my province, and actively aware of the things happening in my city. Calgary is my hometown and if you haven't noticed, Alberta is currently a fucking shit show. Of emotions mostly, oh and government ineffectiveness. I started putting some pieces together in order to get a better understanding of the picture that is my world here in Calgary, Alberta.

Here's the short list of things new for me, this past year:

-the company I work for was sold
-becoming a wife
-finding good renters
-Amazon Prime
-learning alternative therapy
-deciding to get politically enraged
-working from home
-thoughts of starting a family
#COVID19AB

We live in a neighbourhood I'll call upper-middle class. There's a bit of everything; a library, rec centre, schools, wellness spas, hair salons, medical offices, liquor stores and other shopping. In many ways it isn't unlike residential communities around the city. Northern Hills they call it; bit like a village.

Three weeks ago my husband phones me in the middle of the day, it was around lunch time. "Baby, I'm positive." This is how #COVID19AB entered our lives. Just like that, I told my boss via text message I'll be leaving for the day to get tested for COVID-19. I booked my test for a couple hours later and drove home, wondering how when where what, now? As I walked in the house through the garage door the first thing I did was wash my hands and start cleaning. I wiped down the kitchen, every door handle and light switch. I swept the floor. Two hours, I cleaned so I didn't give my brain the option to think about how I potentially just exposed my entire team to coronavirus. After a whole ass year, living this global pandemic, I had to be the one to bring this shit to the office? We'd been doing everything right.

Two nights prior my husband was complaining his thighs hurt. Because provincial restrictions pertaining to the global pandemic stopped him playing rec. league hockey, I thought it was a case of being out of shape. I just thought, he was in the mountains snowboarding last week. He'll take a bath and get over it. The problem is sore muscles can be a symptom of COVID-19. Because there's such a long list of symptoms, depending on your immune system you might be positive and not show any! How did he catch #COVID19AB?
Contact tracers never phoned to tell him he was a close contact of someone who tested positive at Sunshine Village so it wasn't his trip to the mountains. We became the ones responsible for sending our colleagues to get tested for COVID-19. They were a close contact of us. I received my positive test result the next day even though HR already called to say I'm a presumed positive anyway. The day before snowboarding he was at work training his replacement and that dude ended up testing positive for coronavirus. Yet another person in the dealership tests positive. Human Resources shut both our offices for a couple days so the teams could be tested and undertake cleanings.
The two weeks of quarantine that followed were 14 of the most fucked up days I've spent at home. I tested positive for COVID-19 and didn't know I had it. I guess growing up Albertan really does make you irrepressible? In a way his symptoms became much needed information.

Experiencing no symptoms I started working from home. The whole time worried about my husband who seemed to be experiencing a very real, very bad bout of influenza. At the same time I was thinking about me, wondering when the fuck was I going to feel or notice any symptoms of COVID-19? Each day he seemed to feel something new: body aches; sweats followed by cold flashes; around day five he lost his sense of taste and smell. Suddenly there was a cough he hadn't had before. Meanwhile I attended meetings via Zoom call or Microsoft Teams. I thought to myself multiple times throughout the day, is this headache COVID-19 related, or is it the weather changing? Living in Calgary I often experience weather-related migraines. I wondered whether I'd already contracted coronavirus over the last year to try and understand why I was asymptomatic.
I even thought, well maybe my positive test result is false.. could it be? The poor contact tracing in this province is a direct flaw of the UCP government lead by Jason Thomas Kenney. COVID-19 and our province's incompetence is killing us and placing far more frontline workers at risk. Not to mention failing to protect assisted-living facility support staffs and teachers, neither of whom have been prioritized for vaccines. How anyone can say a single thing the UCP is doing, is working, absolutely lives underneath a fucking rock or is a fascist. A January poll result shows just 26 per cent of Albertans would vote UCP again.

I always refer to myself as a dinosaur because I was born in Alberta and didn't leave. Like I'm still looking for bits and pieces of myself in order to make me whole. Half of me was discovered roughly seven years ago when I met my now-husband working in the automotive industry (at a local dealership in Northeast Calgary, nonetheless).
Growing up here, one thing I began to notice about Northeast Calgary: from Metis Trail @ Country Hills Boulevard extending south to Peigan Trail and between Highway #2 appears the most underfunded. This section is old industrial. You need only one trip to Marlborough CTrain station to learn it's a place you wouldn't wish even an enemy have to visit. Much of the mess that exists in this part of our city boils down to a lack of foresight on infrastructure. Calgary's city planners are losers.
Catch me on a good day and I'm willing to bet Northeast Calgary moves the most money in the whole city. Allow me to clarify this: I believe on a daily basis there's so much trade going off in this area that developing their own currency would leave them much better off. Why else would this same area of the city be frowned upon by people who grew up living "in the south"? Capital.
For context:
I went to a classmate's friend's house one weekend for a "house party" in Grade 6. Thinking back, I can't remember but I'm 95% sure my Mom didn't know I was there. This kid's parents were home, upstairs. Luckily my parents treated me as a young adult; trusting me to make the right decisions. We lived in a beautiful SE neighbourhood in the community of Lake Bonavista. Dad and Mom had already split up once and moving us from the NW was his way of reconciling the family... so yeah I was a fucking grown up in my mind.
Girls and boys downstairs playing pool, video games, Truth or Dare, whatever 11 & 12-year-old kids do. (Yup, let your imagination go there) One of the first things we would talk about is teachers and school in general at that age. Extra-curricular activities may have been tied for first-place talking points. Except my friends and I didn't go to the same school as the boys who lived here. In this house there were three brothers, each about one year apart (I couldn't make this shit up I promise) and the boys played hockey with my classmate, Douglas. Now you know why I was there, Mom.
Since my younger brother and I were the new kids we had something magical. I'm referring to the opportunity of making up whatever we wanted about where we came from. At the time I didn't know this. So when my name came up during Truth or Dare, my friends get asked, "Who's Addie?" and like an absolute idiot I said Hi, I'm from the north. And all three brothers and a few other kids said, "oo0oOohh scary!"  I also didn't know then about the whole standing up for myself and saying: "Fuck Off" to males who act like they're better than me. Thankfully I've grown since then and if anybody questions Northeast Calgary I tell them they're uncultured swine.
I remember just standing there with my arms crossed, feeling the cool trim against my back as I leaned against the nicest pool table I'd ever touched. Desperately rolling my eyes in an attempt to not look embarrassed. Eventually, "What school did you go to?" became a question I hoped I wouldn't hear when meeting new people my age. This is only my experience and I'm sure others have better -or worse- stories to tell.
I never thought back to that night at the hockey brothers' house until recently when the topic of my high school reunion came up. It was 10 years last summer and wow, if you've been following this blog for that long I could kiss you when we're fully vaccinated. Cheers!

Our High School, originally referred to as the Nose Creek High School opened in 2005. Two years later when I got there, I started hearing things from older students who would have been the first group to have spent all of grades 10, 11, and 12 at the school. They were saying how the Calgary Catholic School Board (CSSD) took all the shit teachers from other schools and moved them to ours.
Again, I cannot make this up!
I'm a firstborn but friends of mine with older siblings would hear from their friends at other schools about the teachers we were getting. The things said about our new teachers wasn't any good. Without hesitation I will tell you the worst teachers we had when I attended, taught Social Studies. My Grade 12 social teacher was a straight up misogynist. For our final project worth 80% I wrote an essay on the genocide in Rwanda. Since I'd recently started this blog I thought I'll post it so more people can read it and maybe give me feedback. When it came time for our grades this fucker gave me 0% and in the comments he had the link to my blog. At the time the title of this blog was my name. I had to beg this asshole to regrade me. Zero brought my average down significantly. I was a mostly-A's-student and I was freaking out, asking him how this was fair. His words haunt me to this day, "I'll see if I can take another look at it." I told him he had no reason not to. To absolutely no one's surprise, after regrading my essay he determined it couldn't have been worth more than 67% -yet- the first time he read it, he thought it was good enough to be plagiarized, and searched for a source on Google?
FUCK OFF MR. ZEEB.
One day, a different male social teacher didn't come to school. A friend who was in his TA told us he didn't make it the next day either. Soon after, rumours began circulating about this teacher and his habit of hovering over the desks of female students who just happened to have cleavage.
My Mom came in to complain to our Principal about a female social teacher who was educating us on the wrong curriculum. Her word-for-word exchange with students one class was, "when you're young you want to experiment with weed or psychedelics but when you get to be my age, prescription drugs are the way to go!" This same teacher showed up one day wearing two different black loafers, one with a buckle, the other with a tassel. She'd also applied make up to only one of her eyes that day. Tell me why I'd make any of this up?

It seems to me that we are long overdue for a new Social Studies Curriculum in Alberta. Unfortunately the teaching of this subject during my Calgary Catholic high school years is but a small fraction of a much larger concern. Learning there are no Catholic high schools on the list of Top 10 in Calgary doesn't make my opinion as a CSSD student any more valid but the facts are the facts. Catholic school teaching is nothing to brag about. We need a complete overhaul of the Alberta curriculum draft for K-6 and we need it badly. We likely need a new High School curriculum due to the changes in our economy over the last 10 years. Some people will say it doesn't affect them and don't give a shit. Well, that's where you're wrong, friends.. What the UCP is doing to our wonderful province is both disgusting and heartbreaking. I can't fathom how anyone can consider the changes as good in the last two years under this government. I worry about the future that is being carved for generations to come. I don't have kids but I fear what they might go through attending public school as biracial. Christianity, which is a religion based on the life and teachings of a man called Jesus has suddenly transformed into the foundation for Albertans' education?
I wonder how any parent could feel it's acceptable to raise free minded people in Alberta. We should all be shaking. Our nephews and nieces will be affected; friends' children and neighbours. I shudder to think how public school teachers must feel, having received the Alberta curriculum draft on the first day of their 2021 Spring Break. Are UCP Fucking Kidding Here?
If you are a sum of your surroundings then the Alberta curriculum draft affects you. It's almost as if they gathered a gang of racist, xenophobic, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, misogynistic fucks to intentionally drive the rest of us mad. If only it were all a poorly executed April Fool's Joke.

Things are different today. Today when things happen, it's big. It's all over the TL. The news spreads, we have real time updates of anything we want. Information instantly. It seems like that, because we have so many more platforms, anyone with a camera or smartphone can be a reporter. We can't deny the ways in which communication has changed. Major acquisitions are taking place. We have a carbon tax. Cannabis dispensaries replace liquor stores and physiotherapists are moving into former coffee shops or florists. Dope. Marijuana is legal. People are suddenly chefs and catering from their homes full-time. Meanwhile our inner city, now a desert complete with mirages of former nights on the town and daytime foot traffic.
We thought we could support big box stores. Because they employ so many across this great Earth. But no, take one look at Amazon now; and I'm willing to bet a lot of my neighbours have Amazon Prime; upper-middle-and-all, apologizing to U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan. Had they done the right thing and said, "you know what, we're a big ass company! We're Amazon Prime! Let's install portable washrooms along our delivery routes so no Amazon employee will have ever have to worry about finding a restroom on the road." They could then brag about creating more jobs for people. What. The. Fuck. Were You Thinking?

Canada has a lot of one thing: land. The prairies are broad and, well, BC is far ahead of the cannabis production game so why isn't hemp being grown more? What's the big deal? I have had a cannabis prescription for the last five years through NHS and the price to quality ratio compared to what can be had recreationally is astonishing. I call the bud from Canadian LPs or Licensed Producers of cannabis "popcorn farts" you know what I'm talking about, those farts that could be shaped like popcorn because they sound like a PLOP! and they're so dry you wonder if its been dehydrated. Might as well sprinkle it in my tomato sauce when I make some. Fuck it, I'll say it: HEMP IS IN A LOT OF SHIT. When is Canada going to recognize we should be doing much more with it? If I were in High School today, this is an industry I'd want to be exploring. I believe it's time we start calling each other what we really are:
CANADIANS.
While Alberta is a beautiful province I won't say it's the most beautiful because the other day I was scrolling my timeline and a woman called Heather was picking up garbage along the Bow River. I know a lot of places have garbage problems but I still don't think it's fair she had to stop herself counting after picking up 200+ littered masks.

The hard part about living in a place like Calgary is you're constantly defending it. Well I do because I haven't left. I guess I did move to Edmonton once. I remember feeling like a sore thumb and so my time there was short lived. But just like E-town, Cowtown isn't for everyone. My family is what keeps me here and I'm happiest when I'm close to them. I'm also embarrassed to admit we live in Alberta which from an outsider, looks like a hot mess right now. We have a Premier who isn't from around here. This white man has caused so much chaos in the name of "personal responsibility." It's truly aggravating to love a place Doctors are fleeing.

I don't know anything. It isn't a secret. This life only gives you one shot and then we're off to the next. Hopefully for me it's a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. I love baseball, I love my backyard, my annoying freckles or beauty marks as referred by some. I love feeling young again. I became a wife early last year and it was to date the coolest thing I've ever been part of. My husband is the FUCKING MAN. Literally, he says FUCKING frequently. Both of us have been focused on our careers for so long I think we forgot to remember who we are. And we know deep down who it is we want to be, but our work has been our priority and especially for my husband who almost two years ago started a new job after 11 years.

After a couple days the General Manager was fired. The new one was so supportive and impactful but he only stayed for a year, and then the owner moved him to a different store and brought in a different GM. Stability is so crucial when it comes to operating as a small team. If you have an employee staying with you for an entire year, chances are they're enjoying things the way they are and can see themselves staying in the future. This is why I've always celebrated work anniversaries or tried to get the company to buy a cake for an employee on their birthday. These things might seem small but the people behind them are ultimately the only thing worth hanging onto. As a business owner, you must listen more than you speak. Or as my Mother-in-Law would say, "The reason why you have two ears and one mouth."

Today we both have full-time employment with large companies. The Dealer Principal my husband works for now was inducted to Calgary Business Hall of Fame so it's safe to say he has found an employer who will finally value him. It sucks but this small thing is sometimes a lot to ask for. The company I've worked for since 2017 was bought by one of the world's largest distributors of pulp, paper, packaging, tissue, newspaper and plywood. By the end of 2021 we'll each join a company pension plan. This is what we've worked for. Together we own four properties in Calgary. We aren't going anyway. For fuck sakes we're not even close to being finished with Alberta.

If I listen hard enough I can hear the same neighbour start up his Subaru in the early hours of the morning. While I do wonder if he'll ever sell that car, it's these little things that also remind you how some things don't change. And maybe right now it looks like too many of us don't want things to change. Honestly I'm beginning to think that's part of our problem.

One more time will never be enough: THANK YOU to our Frontline #HCW Health Care Workers. We wouldn't do it without you. Simples.

Self-Isolation: Day 4

Today is Monday, April 20th 2020

We started the day with the worst type of breaking news.
A dentist in The Maritimes went on a shooting spree, stealing more than 18 Canadian lives. This event now being called the deadliest mass shooting in Canada. A police officer says they expect to find more victims still. This fucking lunatic had rigged his vehicle to look like an RCMP car!
I wish I could send a letter to each and every family grieving the loss of their loved one today.
Somehow you can't even fathom, 'Rest in Peace' for this kind of thing.

Today is also 4/20.
Did you know you have to smoke weed today?
Following a quick bite of blueberry pancakes, I rolled a joint and indulged myself in some Damn Sour from Delta-9. According to Lift&co - Damn Sour is a slightly sativa-dominant hybrid. THC 23% and CBD 10%. The effect should begin heady then taper into a strong but mellow body effect. If you don't think I'm happy to work-from-home then you're clearly not high enough.

During my high I noticed we have only eight working days remaining in April. My machines sales have been stuck at 1 for the month and I am dying to close a deal with a client I drove to Edmonton to meet with 2 years ago! Since then he has purchased consumables from me approximately two times, and I shit you not it's just tape he buys. Yup, rolls of tape. You can imagine how determined I have been to provide him with an equipment solution like a digital high-speed label printer and finisher.
And I've determined I need to sell at least two more machines in order to get my back my mojo.

Ending the day on a High Note I finished the first of 4 Thomas Kinkade puzzles I bought for self-isolating. On Day 2 of self-isolation in Calgary I told you I'd post a photo once complete.

Thank you for the opportunity to protect and scribe.
Until tomorrow.

Self-Isolation: Day 3

Today is Sunday, April 19th 2020

One of the games I've been playing on my Android to waste time is Hidden City.
If you were the type of kid who loved the 'I Spy' series books I think you'd enjoy it too.
Think: 'Where's Waldo?'

This morning in Calgary is absolutely phenomenal. According to theweathernetwork.ca we are sitting at 10° so far. It's almost noon, so it seems we'll be getting warmer too. Thanks Mister Sun!

For brunch I made one of my favourite Mediterranean dishes: Shakshuka
Spicy Shakshuka; poached eggs in a spicy tomato sauce
If you'd like to give this a try I'll leave the directions below
First chop a small onion
And three or more cloves of garlic, depending on how much you can handle
Using a deep pan, saute together in a couple tablespoons of olive oil
After five or ten minutes season with 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of cumin and a bunch of red chili flakes (add lots if you want this to be more spicy) Combine everything well
Pour 1 can of whole tomatoes into the pan
Season with salt and pepper
Carefully break up the tomatoes
Simmer for approximately 25 minutes, I usually wait until the tomatoes have become very tender
Crack 5 or 6 eggs and cook for about 8 more minutes
You might want to cover the pan with a lid for the last couple minutes to cook the top of the eggs
Remove from heat and garnish with feta, fresh basil or more chili flakes
You can also season with cayenne pepper and nutmeg but I opted not for this morning's brunch

My husband has been watching, "Snow White and the Huntsman".
Since I've seen this movie already I get to work on my isolation diary.
I can hardly believe tomorrow is 4/20.
During March we were both at the office full-time and he knew he would have to take 20 days off starting near the end of April. Yeah, here's an interesting one for you... his employer has forced both him and his business partner to take their vacation days (20 of them) during the pandemic. This - he's told, is to avoid having to lay one or the other off! With the government paying 75% of a company's wages right now this seems like a major fucking joke. But you know what they say about the owners of car dealerships...
They
Don't
Give
A
Fuck.

Can you imagine how far ahead of the curve we'd have been, had we mentioned to Canadians before Christmas when we heard about the coronavirus affecting Asia? If only we started planning for a pandemic four months ago. Meanwhile our country is still "working on" how to assist the hundreds of thousands of frontline workers, Indigenous Peoples, and others more at-risk than ever before. You brag on live television about wanting to get money into the bank accounts of the majority; the Canadians who lost their jobs, but SURPRISE, there was already a plan in place for people who get laid off - it's called EI. Instead you decide to offer them a fancy, new pay cheque to #StayHome and self-isolate. This only makes you look good for the moment. If you asked me, Mr. Trudeau, I say you could have been spending your time more wisely. WAKE UP DUDE. Things are only going to get much worse, before they get any better. End rant.

Later we'll go for a short walk around the neighbourhood to take advantage of that Vitamin D.

Thank you for the opportunity to protect and scribe.
Until tomorrow.

Self-Isolation: Day 2

Today is Saturday, April 18th 2020

Our eyes opened up to the weekend, a little after 07:00. Rolling over, I snuggling further into the bed sheets I didn't want to climb out of yet. The weekends probably don't mean as much if you've been laid of or in self-isolation but it's only day 2 for us. Hello.

I closed my eyes and fell back asleep for another 45 minutes or so.
The phone ringing woke me up.
'Home' it said on my screen and I knew my Mom would phone again in the next 10 minutes if I didn't pick up. Good Morning.

She's asking how we are feeling. Do we have symptoms developing?
If anyone asks I've been saying "I'm OK." But I'm only saying this to help myself believe it. It's what we do to protect ourselves maybe. She tells me to have a coffee and we'll talk later. Click.
I am feeling well enough to cook meals, think straight, smoke a joint, write here, and work on a Thomas Kinkade designed Beauty and the Beast puzzle. I only started the 500-piece distraction yesterday but I think I'll have it completed by Sunday evening. If I do I'll share a picture in tomorrow's update.

After coffee we agreed it was a day to have French Toast for breakfast.
Crack 3 eggs
Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract
A sprinkle of brown sugar
Can I have some milk?
Nope! Smells weird.
Whisk it up
Turn on the stove
Add butter to the pan
Soak 4 slices of whole wheat toast
Fry them until they're golden brown
Add 'Milk' to the grocery list on the fridge

I have a meeting in a little over an hour. It's because I'm on the condominium board for my townhouse. Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) should take place next month and my guess is we'll have to send a link to owners for a Zoom meeting, or something similar.

Yesterday I realized I have an opportunity to work smarter now while I work-from-home.
People (meaning clients) have more time on their hands. Especially on the weekends; which were normally reserved for going out and plans. If their business is non-essential they'll be stressing out about how they will pay their rent or other bills. If they already work-from-home, as in their business is a home-business, maybe they have to rework the business strategy. Some of them might be wondering how they will come out of this still a business-owner. It's not about if, it's about WHEN - when we come out of this, we will be battered and blue but not broken.

We must continue practicing social-distancing in public. And paying attention to the world, our health, and the well-being of our families.

Thank you for the opportunity to protect and scribe.
Until tomorrow.

Self-Isolation: Day 1

Today is Friday, April 17th 2020

I woke up around 05:45 and tossed in bed for approximately 20 minutes to wake myself up fully. It's my day to head into the office. For the last month we've been rotating our small team of five to minimize staff at work, keeping three of us to work-from-home.

I washed my face, brushed my teeth and for some reason decided to check my work phone. Maybe I had a feeling something was off, because it was.
My colleague; whom I was at the office with Wednesday, sent a WhatsApp message to our group stating he woke up around 02:00 "with shortness of breath, nausea, cough and chest pain suddenly".

Immediately I'm thinking about the coronavirus, the one they call COVID-19.

He's in his mid-twenties, living at home with his father. Thankfully it was just him and I working together, so we can rule out our sixty-seven-year-old Manager having had close contact. The two of them hadn't worked together in a couple weeks. Our two additional co-workers who were in the office the day before did not have a problem covering for us today. This is what we do - protect each other.

What I didn't realize at the time of the original WhatsApp message: he has asthma.
Any person with underlying health conditions has to be extra careful when they are in public today. We simply cannot know who may be carrying the coronavirus and this should be enough. Shouldn't it? Or do we need to continually watch a rise in confirmed cases in the Calgary zone for our people to take this seriously?

After performing the self-assessment online through MyHealth.ab.ca he will be referred for testing and must self-isolate for 10 days or until symptoms are completely gone (whichever is longer). Now my house is doing the same. This is what we do - protect each other.

My husband was also on duty to work-from-home yesterday so his office was not potentially exposed either; thankfully. He notified his boss as soon as I had the heart to let him know about the situation, and immediately contacted the rest of the management team. I, too decided to perform the self-assessment and the recommendation was to isolate for 10 days as well, based on the one symptom I had experienced over the last week. This is how we will effectively reduce the spread of the deadly COVID-19 in Calgary. We must protect each other.

For most of the day we sat across the kitchen table in work-mode.
Answering and making phone calls
Sending e-mails
Taking deep breaths from time to time
Just doing our best

We are both in sales of essential goods and services so it's important our clients know we are here to help. More so during these super scary days, when the President of America is tweeting about reopening the US economy. Meanwhile daily deaths in major US cities continues to surpass the 500's.

Our economy here in Alberta was in a rough patch BEFORE the pandemic started. But here we are sitting in our home offices trying to weather this storm. And it's only going to get worse if we don't keep our distance. I think if I do end up selling any equipment I'll burst into tears.

Thank you for the opportunity to protect and scribe.
Until tomorrow.

4.4.20

04-04-2020

Usually I have a lot to say but lately it's harder to have an opinion.
I guess it's because we're only really looking for the facts these days. Facts about COVID-19, obviously.

Yesterday the President of the United States ordered 3M (Yup, THE One & Only) to cease exports of respirators to Canada. What is n95? N95 is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and efficient filtration of airborne particles (95%, hence the designation).
What a total fucking asshole!
President Trump is possibly the single most self-serving person on this planet right now. Damn, I guess giving my opinion can still be pretty easy :)

All opinions aside, since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11th, I have seen a lot of news. And I'm sure you have too - legitimate news, semi-legit news, fake news, SUPER-fake news, the unbelievable, and all the TikTok videos in between.
Over the last three weeks I've learned to count myself luckier than many Canadians who have had the loss of major contracts, or to face layoffs, and in the worst case, bankruptcy. This is only the beginning and I am proud to hear the daily updates from Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau which have left me with my hand on my heart. We can get through this by listening and having compassion.
Now there's a word Donald Trump has never heard of!

Like many people, I'm frightened about the pandemic and what the coronavirus can achieve if we let our foot off the brake, or gas, or whatever it is that we are doing to slow this fucker down.
I'm pretty sure it's called, "being aware of why we do certain things."
Today more than ever before we must, must, must, must, must think about how we dress, where we go to buy the things we need, and where we put our hands. I'm scared and I'm not afraid to say that either. Maybe it's because Canada has nearly 13,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Or maybe it's because I found Johns Hopkins University map tracking global coronavirus infections and deaths; receiving billions of hits each day.

Are you paying attention yet?

It's the fourth day of the fourth month of the 20th year of the 21st century. In the Chinese zodiac it's the Year of the Rat - the first of all zodiac animals.
In Chinese culture rats were identified as a sign of wealth and surplus due to the fact they multiply rapidly. The rat also represents the beginning of a new day; yet here we are living each day like it's our last....

When I looked up Donald Trump's zodiac sign I realized how much of a bitch he really is. Yup, that's right he was born in 1946 - the Year of the Dog. Now a dog's most defining character is of course his loyalty. Honest and popular in social circles, I have to agree the senile, old brute cannot learn to keep his mouth shut. He might care about his looks but when it comes to sounding intelligent, ha, forget it... he just barks and barks, and he'll keep barking until he blows your fucking house down.
The best thing I learned about Dogs is despite how they act, deep down inside they are worried and anxious. They even pee a little on the floor when they get too excited about something, and I'm convinced people in The White House are probably sick of cleaning up piss these last few years. The man is as volatile as a 12 week old puppy.

Dogs of 1946 are particularly known for being dream chasers, extremely opinionated and quick to defend their stance. Hmm. Now that's pretty interesting stuff right there.
If you don't believe me, name one good thing Trump has done for the good of all Americans.
I'm not saying Donald Trump should resign for the good of the American people, but, the facts are the facts - and you sir, are killing your country one tweet at a time.
Don't @ me.

Happiness is a Project -Music Edition

If I Die Young I'd like to be remembered as the girl who kept that weird blog titled, all I know is that I know nothing.

I love the song by Benny Blanco, I Found You, with Calvin Harris. It came out in November 2018, about a year after one of my good friends from college and I ended our friendship. The problem with college friendships is you're either high or drunk the entire time.

It can be hard to not feel threatened by friendships in college - especially if you take a specialized program where the room for error is much smaller.

Am I Wrong?
Yes, also a pretty great song by Norwegian duo, Nico & Vinz.

Becoming happier with yourself as you navigate the latter half of your twenties is a project. When you're twenty it feels like you can blow the roof off any building. Suddenly, you're 22 and feeling your best because everyone thinks you're hot, because, well, you're hot. And when you're 25 you think, wow, only five more years till I'm 30 - better keep up appearances. So you go harder than you did when you were 18. You're hitting every happy hour there is. Then something switches when you turn twenty-seven. I can't even explain what happens, really, but it seems like there was a box in your body all your life and you used to put things into it and take them out all the time. No problems. Life is good, you and your box and your life and then one day you go check out your box and it's closed. Taped shut, no notice, not a pictogram, nothing. You can't play with the shit in your box anymore.

I haven't really figured out the details.
One thing I know for sure is I want that Old Thing Back.

The music edition of my happiness project sort of came to be accidentally, after getting home from work the other day. Earlier that day an e-mail circulated to all branches of the company I work for, stating due to the COVID-19/coronavirus we would be implementing 25% staff reduction and rotation schedule. My 5-person team, already down to 4 because our manager recently returned from vacation and is in self-isolation for 14 days, would be rotating three in the office and one person working from home. Each day we receive corporate updates on the growing concern by e-mail. Yesterday, one of my coworkers came to work saying his daughter is experiencing symptoms of the dreaded COVID-19. We are now down to 3 staff members in "good and able" health. This morning we've been advised through e-mail that teams will further be reduced to minimum staff required on-site. This means each work day, 2/3 will be at work. I understand I'm not in the worst position (by far) considering companies are having to lay off staff or close entirely - but being at work in a state of emergency is really weird.

That's Life.

What do we do when we're being told by the government to stay inside?
We turn up the fucking music, and start dancing.

Since learning about the first death in our province I've had this tight feeling in my chest. It's almost as if I want to monitor myself breathing now, or like I'm more aware of my own breathing today than ever before. The line up outside of Costco this afternoon was down the side of the building, while they explained they were doing their best to limit the amount of customers in at once in order to protect the public, as well as their staff. This was amazing. And if you didn't understand before how serious this is, just turn on the radio for five minutes and have a listen. You'll hear that the death toll in Italy has now surpassed China. You'll hear about the state of utter disbelief and emergency in Spain. You'll hear about a bonspiel that took place with Alberta doctors present, and someone traveling from Las Vegas to Saskatchewan was involved with transmitting the virus at the event. Three students belonging to the Calgary Catholic school board have confirmed cases of COVID-19.

This is More Than Words, people.

And I cannot help but think of our first responders, grocery store and pharmacy employees who also have to wake up each morning and face their work during this most unsettling time for all of us. While many of us are at home taking in breaking news from behind our computers or TV screens, wondering when retail shops will close, others are not in the same position. While we might Wanna Be Startin' Something, we just have to try and maintain a positive mind. Even though it feels like this big, Black Tar Cloud is hovering over our planet right now.

While we wait for the darkest part of the storm to pass, let's do our part to support local businesses as and when we can. Let's limit our gatherings to six people as much as possible, and practice 6-feet social distancing from people when we are together. It's not possible to protect each other without each and every one of us working hard, and working together. Come on people - "wash your hands"?and "cover your mouth when you cough"? These things are as Easy (Like Sunday Morning).

Deep down I believe we're all going to be just fine. It won't be a straight journey, or a very nice road. But we have to let others know, I've Been Thinking About You, and we also must protect ourselves in the process. Now is not the time for an attitude of, "You Need Me, I Don't Need You". It's more about staying confident and Strawberry Fields Forever.

I keep wondering what I need to do to convince myself that if we work together we can accomplish whatever we put our minds to. Is this something you've been struggling with too? Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, I suppose...

Comment how you're doing, what you're up to, and some of your favourite songs that I missed.
